The first handshake with a non-human in space
It is not an alien but Robonaut 2 (R2) is the first robot that lives in space, he arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) in February 2011.
As you can see in the video he can interact with the astronauts as he did yesterday shaking hands with the commander Daniel Burbank.
The astronaut, as you can hear in the video, described the robotic grip of his colleague as "firm".
So that R2 could articulate his hand, ground controllers activated software that allows him to move hiswrist, extend his right hand and articulate fingers.
Then, the robot used its power to express in sign language 'Hello world'
Few information about Robonaut
With several months of delay due to technical problems, the robot took off aboard the space shuttle 'Discovery' in February 2011.
The construction of the humanoid has cost 2.5 million dollars.
The humanoid will stay on the ISS to live permanently. Gradually the NASA engineers will improve their skills in order to undertake new tasks and to assist astronauts in their missions.
During the first years he will take simple maintenance tasks ends as he prepares for risky missions.
