Cornell University (USA) has launched a proposal for those engineers who want to simulate how they will feed astronauts on a future mission to Mars. The experiment aims to investigate what is better for future astronauts: whether to cook their own food or feed from the usual space prepared products.
According to Cornell University, the objectives of this project, in which are also involved NASA and the University of Hawaii-Manoa, are to determine the acceptability of instant food prepared by the crew and its changes during the duration of the mission; as well as to determine whether acuity, taste, smell, and the permeability of the nasal airways are kept constant during the isolation of the astronaut, or how it influences nutrient intake or changes in the diet for 120 days in the mood, among others.
To carry out this mission, the volunteers will have to simulate the lives of astronauts thoroughly as possible, imitating, well, normal working conditions in space missions. The university has detailed, in addition that the elected volunteers will have all expenses paid, including housing and transportation in Hawaii. He will receive $ 25 per day too, so, just after the experience he will have raised about $ 3,000.
Regarding the conditions for participating in this mission, volunteers must be graduates in engineering college, life sciences, physics, mathematics or computer science and must have experience of at least three years, demonstrate the ability to pass a class flight 2, no history of surgery of the upper respiratory tract, have a sense of taste and smell normal, to be "non smoker" since, at least, 24 months ago, and have a fluent oral and written English, among other requirements.
There is an excellent and new video on the human need for exploration, written and produced by Josh Byerly and John Streeter and voiced by Peter Cullen. It is the NASA's new video "We Are The Explorers,"
